skater motor boats has completed the hull mold for its new 588 catamaran. All that remains for the Douglas, Mich. company is to complete the platform around the mold that the skater director began building five years ago, and the builder can begin building the first model.

The 13-foot-wide cat will have a 55-foot running surface that includes a 78-inch tunnel. Hledin built the stopper for the mold himself by hand in his rare “free” moments, hence the time it took to complete the project.

“We didn’t want to talk about it much or advertise it until we were ready to build a boat,” said Tony Cutsuries, the company’s national sales manager. “Now we are.”

Pro Skater Custom, each deck is hand built and varies based on buyer preference.

Hledin hand-built the connector for the 588. Now it is being dismantled and demolished.

With two engines, the twin engine boat weighs 14,000 to 15,000 pounds. Although Cutsuries said he’s expecting a twin Mercury race 1550/1350 as standard performance for the cat, the company will offer it in a four engine configuration.

“Pete thinks it’ll do 140-150 mph with two engines in 1350 mode,” Cutsuries said. “That’s more than respectable for a really big boat – the biggest of the Skater line.”
