Popular ways to design your home

When it comes time for a home makeover, you may be at a loss as to what is popular today for a trendy living space.

According to a survey of interior designers by 1stDibs, an interior design company, greens and blues, bold patterns and plants are among the latest popular home styles.

Lori Duncan, owner of Blue Fern Merchant, an interior design company in Newnan, said peacock blue, dark green and charcoal are popular colors for walls. She added that light gray tones are out and seen as a bit mundane.

The popular colors are something the interior designer said are classic and never get old.

Duncan added that “bold, colorful wallpaper with a big print” is making a comeback.

In addition to wallpaper, Duncan says herringbone patterned wall treatment is also becoming increasingly popular.

However, the treatment of lap walls is on the way out, Duncan said, because it’s been overdone.

When it comes to cushions, Duncan suggested having a variety of colors and textures.

“All types of pillows are good, and they can have different textures and colors in the room. It doesn’t have to be white and neutral,” she said. “Colors make you happy.”

Duncan said that not everything has to fit together. A room doesn’t have to be cohesive in terms of textures, colors, and style, but the different parts must all make sense together.

“It’s boring when it fits together. It’s okay to have different styles in one room. Not everything has to be traditional or modern. You can mix your pieces with all different eras,” she said. “But it has to make sense. It has to work well together… It has to feel like it belongs together.”

For furniture, Duncan said camel leather, green velvet, terracotta and peacock blue were popular colors.

Velvet, linen and leather are also good fabrics for furniture.

Rounded barrel chairs and swivel chairs are popular home furnishings, Duncan said, and mid-century modern upholstered chairs are also gaining popularity.

Just like the textures of cushions and wallpaper, the textures of furniture can be mixed and matched. Duncan suggested mixing multiple textures in a space, allowing wood and metal furniture to occupy a space.

“Not everything has to be made of wood. You want multiple textures. Anything that has the same kind of look and feel can be boring,” she said.

Smaller decorative pieces and plants can add life and character to a room.

Decorative items that look aged or used – Duncan calls them well-travelled pieces – always look good.

These pieces can be family heirlooms, items from estate sales and thrift stores, or something bought while traveling.

Adding some greenery to a room is an easy way to add refreshing energy to a space. Houseplants are popular right now, Duncan said, and while live plants are best, there are some good fakes if you need to decide on an artificial one.

“Plants make you happy,” she says. “They make the room look fresh and clean.”

How a room is lit is an important part of the decor and a great way to make a statement.

Lamps made of brass or black are popular, according to Duncan.

She said if a room is big then it should have big lighting fixtures. They can even be a bit oversized because they end up making a statement and illuminating a space better than smaller lights.

Luminaires can be of any style, Duncan said.

“It’s okay if they’re different, like a little bit more modern, or a little bit more vintage, or a little bit more eclectic,” she said. “Try something new and different that might be outside of your comfort zone instead of staying away.”

In addition to lighting fixtures, Duncan said matching lamps on nightstands on either side of a bed are a great way to create a degree of symmetry in a bedroom.

For bedrooms, Duncan suggested having a light colored rug with cowhide over it, or a vintage Persian rug with a lighter color over it. Blankets and several pillows in the bedroom are also highly recommended.

“Pillows are huge for a bedroom. Men hate pillows, women love pillows,” she said. “The more pillows you have, the better it is.”

Finally, Duncan said, don’t always go after trends because if a space is too trendy, you might not like it in a few years.

Instead, you should decorate your home in a way that makes you happy for a longer period of time, so the styling and decoration should reflect what pleases you.

“It’s okay to be different, but it just has to make sense,” she said. “Your house is your home and it must make you happy.”
