PET polyethylene terephthalate, a condensate, is mainly used in food packaging films and textile fibers and other applications. With the widening range of applications, it is used as a packaging material not only for beverage bottles, but also for cans and sheets of amorphous PET (APET) and crystalline PET (CPET). In the last five years, new polymer products made from engineering PET and copolyester have been used for engineering and specialty purposes.

China PETG plastic film for beverage bottles is made from terephthalic acid (TPA), which is obtained by oxidizing paraxylene. Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) is produced from the purification of TPA or the reaction of TPA with methanol. Or TPA is further oxidized to produce pure terephthalic acid (PTA). Another basic raw material for PET is ethane, which is reacted and converted into ethylene glycol (EG). China White PETG film is a condensate made by the polymerization of DMT (or PTA) with EG in the successive molten states, followed by a solid state polymerization process to obtain large grains, final molecular weight and inherent viscosity. This solid state process also results in a polymer with sufficiently low ethanol content. Typical PET resins melt at around 480℉ (248.89℃), but highly crystalline PET has a melting point of around 520℉ (271.11℃). Oriented crystalline PET has excellent strength, toughness and transparency.

The polymers colored in the reactor do not require recombination, which adversely affects physical properties, and improve color uniformity. Pure resins with different intrinsic viscosities are available. The slow rate of crystallization of PET copolymers enables the production of high-quality bottles under a wide variety of processing conditions. Extrusion blow molded polymers are also available. China White PETG film combines excellent melt strength with a slow rate of crystallization and can be easily processed on suitable extrusion blow molding equipment. Various reinforced, flame retardant and other specialty polymers are introduced or improved to meet new applications.

China PETG clear plastic film combines high rigidity, hardness and good toughness, even at low temperatures. Its transparency, toughness and melt strength allow it to be used in injection molding, blow molding and extrusion of profiles, tubing, film and sheet. Unmodified PETG or PETG with various additives available for injection molding include mold release agents, masterbatches and impact modifiers.

PETG should be dried at 120℉~160℉(48℃-66℃) for about 4~6 hours before molding or extrusion, and the melting temperature should be between 420℉~510℉(215℃-265℃). The processing equipment pressure holding time should be shorter at higher temperature to prevent excessive degradation. Injection molding should be performed on an injection molding machine whose injection volume reaches 50% to 80% of its capacity. China White PETG sheet can be extrusion blow molded at melt temperatures between 400℉-450℉ (204℃-232℃) into transparent bottles for shampoos, liquid detergents, hygiene products, mineral oils and food packaging. This material meets FDA standards for direct food contact. When used for injection molding, PETG is typically processed in a melt temperature range of 450℉-510℉ (232℃-265℃) with mold temperatures between about 70℉-130℉ (21℃-55℃). Current applications include instrument covers, machine covers, cosmetic cases, lever pointers, display components and toys.

China’s PETG plastic film, which is mainly used in soft drink packaging, has accounted for nearly 100 percent of the non-recyclable 2-liter packaging container market, and 1.5-liter, 1-liter, 0.5-liter and smaller PETG bottles are also widely accepted.

PETG is also used in food, alcohol and cleaning products. Demand for PETG for packaging of non-carbonated beverages and industrial products is expected to continue to grow. Foods to be packaged include mustard, gum products, peanut butter, condiments, cooking oils, cocktails and juice concentrates. PETG has gained wide popularity in vitamin and detergent packaging.

One of the newest and fastest growing applications for PETG clear plastic film containers from China is food or beverage packaging that needs to be filled at high temperatures. Many foods, especially fruit or fruit-heavy foods or beverages, need to be packaged at 180℉ (82.22℃) or higher to allow pasteurization of products and containers during filling. Containers create stress concentrations during stretch blow molding. Heat resistant technologies, often referred to as “thermofixing”, have been greatly improved. Juice beverages, teas, certain isotonic and sports drinks, flavorings and certain mineral waters require containers rated for filling at 190℉ to 195℉ (87℃-90℃).

In addition, China white PETG sheet is widely used in extrusion coating and extrusion forming of film and sheet. PET is used as an extrusion coating material for bakeable carton packaging, and crystalline PET (CPET) can be used as a base material for sheets in ovens.

PET film is used for meat and cheese packaging, magnetic tape, electrical insulation, printing plates and bottle packaging bags. Non-crystalline, non-oriented PET sheet and film are gradually applied to shaped containers, trays, foam products and beverage cups.
