SCARBOROUGH – Mildred Ruth (Randall) Grubbs, 89, passed away peacefully after a long illness on May 23, 2021 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Middletown, Connecticut. Mildred was born on May 16, 1932 in South Thomaston to Milledge and Ruth (Simmons) Randall. She graduated from Rockland High School in Maine. Mildred had a strong work ethic. During her lifetime she worked for Curren Electric Supply and sold Sarah Coventry Jewelry. She processed the payroll for the EJ Korvette retail store and drove a school bus. She worked as a country mail carrier for the United States Post Office for over two decades and retired in 1994. Mildred lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and California, but for most of her life and the past 40 years she lived in Maine, which she loved and always considered her home. Mildred’s favorite spots were her home in Maine, especially when family and friends came to visit. She loved her time on Pleasant Island, Old Orchard Beach, planting and tending her flowers outside on her deck and wherever Don Campbell performed. She loved decorating for Christmas and filled every possible room in her home with her decorations, many given to her by friends who knew how much she loved Christmas. Mildred was determined and persistent, and insisted on living alone as long as possible. Mildred is survived by her children, Dale A. Grubbs of Nobleboro, W. Darrald Atwood and Mrs. Theresa from Middlebury, Connecticut, as well as her daughter Dawn Marie O’Reilly and her husband Michael from Middletown, Connecticut, all of their grandchildren. She is survived by seven grandchildren, Dale A. Grubbs Jr., Ryan Atwood, Brendan Atwood, Makayla Johansen and husband Austin, William O’Reilly, Nolan O’Reilly, and Jacob O’Reilly; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She has had many good lifelong friends, and some special ones who have helped her as long as she could stay self-employed in her Maine home. The tour will be held Wednesday, June 2 at 11:00 am to 12:00 pm The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 29 Ocean House Rd., Cape Elizabeth, followed by a memorial service at 12 noon. The funeral will take place on Thursday, June 3, at 11 a.m. at Ocean View Cemetery in South Thomaston. Arrangements entrusted to Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland. Mildred’s family is especially grateful for the Maine and Connecticut hospice program that has enabled Mildred to spend her days at home.
