How manufacturers can strengthen process resilience

The Resilience Index is a comprehensive survey of the state of resilience in UK manufacturing. The study, commissioned by RS Components, uses robust datasets spanning 20 years to examine how resilient UK industry is and where improvements can be made to promote commercial security and success.

The Resilience Index: Process is the second in a series of three reports dedicated to industrial resilience. Here, Richard Jeffers, Director of Maintenance Solutions at RS Components, shares some of his findings showing how a strategic approach to outsourcing can help build process resilience across manufacturing.

Outsourcing is part of a series of measures designed to help protect businesses, make them think and act differently, and establish a culture of continuous improvement that will be the foundation for future process improvements, stability and transformation .

Think differently about outsourcing

Outsourcing strategies must focus on achievable benefits in addition to potential cost savings. For example, outsourcing can increase quality and innovation or make processes more efficient. A good example would be outsourcing control of a site’s inventory to the provision of experts.

Organizations should carefully consider whether outsourcing decisions would free up enough internal capacity to help the organization focus on core competencies or enable faster adjustments or transformations.

The standard position of taking over processes internally in order to increase cost efficiency must be continuously questioned and the holistic advantages of a strategic outsourcing approach must be carefully examined.

When reviewing processes, senior engineers must ask questions about why they are doing what they are doing and determine the overall benefits of keeping them internal. Outsourcing to an experienced supplier could well be the answer.

RS Components’ range of strategic outsourcing support can help deliver tangible resiliency results across a wide range of infrastructure and operational domains. These include inventory, procurement and maintenance solutions, technical support, supplier relationship management, extensive product ranges, PPE and safety products, supplier partnerships for training and educational programs that can help make a difference.

Outsourcing to competent suppliers must be seen as a significant strategic tool that experienced engineers can use to their advantage. Successful outsourced partnerships are proven to free up experienced engineers to focus on the core competencies that matter and empower them to deliver greater value to improve operations and productivity.

The Resilience Index: Process

The Resilience Index: Process is the second report in a series of three from RS Components. The first report focused on plant resilience and the third report, to be published soon, looks at human resilience. Each report includes actions and advice for senior engineers looking to strengthen their facilities, processes and people to succeed.
